The Composition of Tobacco Cigarette and an Electronic Cigarette

I hope I do not bore you to death while trying to explain to you the difference between a tobacco cigarette and an electronic cigarette. I am doing this to educate you as you make a decision about smoking in general as well as the products you choose.

The Tobacco Cigarette

Many different types of tobacco are smoked today. Some of these include cigars and pipes, which may or may not have a filter. That is true of regular cigarettes as well. This filter is usually made of a type of cellulose, which comes from trees.

The filtered versions of this popular old-fashioned smoking stick first became popular in the 1960s, when the news about lung cancer and other diseases were first linked to this activity. At one point in history came the arrival of the “light” cigarette, which is made with tiny holes in it in order to dilute the concentration of the smoke.

Both the filtered and light tobacco products were created as an attempt to make smoking safer. However, one disadvantage of this is that most smokers find a way to get the “rush” they always wanted.

For instance, when smoking a light or filtered cigarette they may breathe deeper or cover up the holes in the light varieties. Of course, this defeats the purpose greatly but that is beside the point.

The result is that oftentimes smokers of lights and filters wind up actually breathing in more cancer-causing agents than those who inhale from medium or regular cigarettes.

Traditional tobacco products typically contain hundreds of additives, and among them include the following: Acetic acid, Ammonia, Amyl Alcohol, Benzyl Alcohol, Carbon Dioxide, Menthyl Acetate, Nonanoic  Acid, Rhodinol, and natural flavors. As you can see, most of these are probably not what you want to have in your body and this is only a small fraction of what is contained in a tobacco cigarette.

The Electronic Cigarette

This is a newer smoking device, which has received a fair amount of recognition as a safe alternative to traditional smoking. The liquid nicotine solution used in them is usually diluted with some type of common food additive, such as propylene glycol or glycerin.

Other additives used in the making of nicotine solutions for electronic cigarettes include one or more of the following:

  • Tobacco essence
  • Essence
  • Organic acid
  • Anti-oxidation agent
  • Butyl valerate
  • Isopentyl hexonate
  • Lauryl laurate
  • Benzyl benzoate
  • Methyl octynicate
  • Ethyl heptylate
  • Hexyl hexanoate
  • Geranyl butyrate
  • Menthol
  • Citric acid
  • Water
  • Alcohol

Comparison

Further research is being done on the use of electronic cigarettes. Since they are not loaded with as many toxins as the traditional tobacco counterparts, they are regarded as a safe alternative.

However, not all health organizations in the world approve of it as a replacement therapy for people who want to stop smoking. Then again, the efforts made to prove that it is safer than traditional tobacco products are being made.
